Characteristics and Emission Tests of Briquettes Made from Palm Oil Shell Waste with Varation of LDPE Plastic as Alternative Fuel

Palm oil shell waste (Cangkang Kelapa Sawit or CKS) is one of Indonesia's largest wastes, however, plastic waste is still a problem. Limited fossil fuels have made all elements of society participate in looking for new alternative fuels. In this research, briquettes were made from CKS waste with the addition of <10% LDPE plastic variation. The briquettes were molded with a piston pressure of 70 N/m2, dried in an oven at 105oC for 2 hours, and dried in a room exposed to indirect sunlight for 3 days at temperature 600C . This research adds compression tests and emission test designs for more in-depth analysis and is the latest compared to similar research. Mechanical analysis shows that adding 5% LDPE plastic produces the highest compressive strength value compared to other briquettes with a value of 2.56 MPa. Although the compressive strength value of these briquettes is not yet comparable to coal-based briquettes, these briquettes can be recommended as an alternative fuel on a household scale. In terms of calorific value and proximate analysis, briquettes with the addition of 9% LDPE plastic produce the highest calorific value, namely 6058 cal/g, and the proximate analysis meets the standards for wood charcoal briquettes except for ash content, which is slightly above SNI 1683:2021 standard. For emission test analysis on measurement designs D1 and D2, this is the recommended design for briquette combustion chambers that produce emissions following the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation No. 047 of 2006 emission standards.
