Age-Related Changes in Semen Quality: Comprehensive Insights from Eastern Iranian Tertiary Care Fertility Center Data

چکیده

Introduction: Infertility affects millions of couples worldwide; today, it has become a major global health concern. Male factors, particularly altered semen quality, contribute to approximately half of all infertility cases. In Iran, male infertility prevalence is notably higher than global trends, warranting further investigation into age-related changes in semen parameters. This research assesses the impact of age on semen quality among males attending a tertiary care fertility center in Eastern Iran over a ten-year period.Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of semen samples from 2,898 patients, aged 15 to 79, at the Afzalipour Hospital infertility center. Semen analysis included measurements of volume, concentration, total count, motility, and morphology, following World Health Organization (WHO) standards. Statistical analyses were done using ANOVA and chi-square tests.Results: The study found significant age-related declines in semen volume, total sperm count, sperm motility, and normal sperm morphology. Notably, older men exhibited lower semen volumes (r= -0.079, P-value<0.0001), total sperm counts (r= -0.044, P-value=0.03), and total motility (r= -0.127, Pvalue<0.0001). Interestingly, sperm concentration showed a slight positive correlation with age among men with normal sperm counts (r= 0.062, P-value=0.002).Conclusions: Age significantly impacts several semen parameters, with older men showing reduced semen volume, total sperm count, motility, and normal morphology. These investigations underscore the significance of regarding age in infertility treatments. Research in future must concentrate on understanding the underlying mechanisms and regional factors influencing trends to develop targeted interventions for improving male health.
