Effect of Combination of Shallot and Bean Sprouts Extract as a PGR on Total Phenolic and Antioxidant Activity of Potato Plants

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a strategic food commodity with high nutritional value and an increasing market demand, but its productivity is still low. Increasing potato plant productivity both in terms of quality and quantity can be achieved by adding a plant growth regulator (PGR). In this study, a combination of shallot extract and bean sprout extract was used as a natural PGR to be applied to potato plants. This study aimed to determine the effect of the combination of shallot extract and bean sprout extract as a natural PGR on the total phenolic and antioxidant activity of potato plants. The total phenolic of potato plant yields was analyzed using the Folin–Ciocalteu method, and their antioxidant activity through the DPPH test. This study utilized a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with seven combinations of PGR treatments of shallot extract and bean sprout extract, namely K = 0: 0; A = 10: 0; B = 8: 2; C = 6: 4; D = 4: 6; E = 2: 8; and F = 0: 10 (g/L). The results showed that the combination of shallot and bean sprout extracts significantly affected the total phenolic and antioxidant activity of potatoes. Variation B produced the best results, with a total phenolic of 30.79 mg GAE/g and an IC50 value of 52.68 ppm, which is considered a strong antioxidant. Therefore, this research can help potato farmers increase potato yields using more environmentally friendly materials.
