Scenario-Based Life Cycle Assessment of Construction Waste Management in Developing Megacities: Evidence from Tehran, Iran

The rapid expansion of urbanization and infrastructure development has led to a significant increase in construction and demolition waste (CDW) generation. Effective CDW management is essential for minimizing environmental impacts and promoting sustainable resource utilization. This study applies a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach to compare two CDW management scenarios in Tehran: Scenario 1, the conventional landfilling of CDW at the Abali disposal site, and Scenario 2, the recycling of CDW into secondary aggregates. The assessment was conducted using CML baseline methodology to quantify environmental impacts across various categories, including global warming potential, human toxicity, abiotic depletion, and terrestrial ecotoxicity. The results reveal that recycling significantly reduces environmental burdens compared to landfilling, with reductions of 79% in photochemical oxidation, 76% in global warming potential, and nearly 100% in human toxicity and freshwater aquatic ecotoxicity. The findings highlight the critical role of CDW recycling in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving natural resources, and mitigating toxic emissions. Given Tehran’s high CDW generation rate and current low recycling efficiency, this study emphasizes the urgent need for policy interventions and investment in advanced recycling technologies. The insights gained provide valuable guidance for urban policymakers, waste management authorities, and construction industry stakeholders to transition toward a circular economy model in CDW management.
