چکیده

Background and Aim: Head lice is known as one of the health problems worldwide. The increasing resistance of this parasite to common treatments and the need for effective and safe treatment methods have greatly increased the importance of searching for natural and herbal treatments. This study aims to review and introduce effective and available materia medica in Iranian traditional medicine sources for head lice treatment. Methods: This study is an original research based on reliable texts of Persian medicine. In this research, the materia medica mentioned in the treatment of head lice in the second volume of Ibn Sina's Book "Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb" was collected. Subsequently, the perspectives of scholars in selected books of traditional pharmacology have been incorporated into the existing tables and information. The steps of conducting research include: determining keywords related to the title, searching in texts, preparing a single list, finding synonyms and scientific names, reviewing, extracting nouns from compounds, summarizing, scoring, prioritizing and drawing a diagram. Ethical Considerations: In the present study, the ethical aspects of the library-based research, including the authenticity of the texts, honesty and integrity, have been duly observed. Results: In the present study, 47 materia medica were investigated and introduced for the treatment of head lice, of which 70% are of herbal origin, 18% mineral and 12% animal-based. Considering the defined criteria, beetroot (9 points) achieved the highest score in terms of anti-lice effectiveness. The single drugs, honey, mercury and wood tar, scored 8 points, followed by peppermint and lentil bran with 6 points each. The most common mode of application for these materia medica is washing the hair, accounting for 44%. Conclusion: The list of drugs collected in this study can be considered as a basis in further basic and clinical studies to design and produce effective herbal drugs in treating head lice.
