Using the Explosive Forming Process in Forming the Spherical Joint Connection

In this research, the influence of effective parameters on the fabrication of spherical joints via explosive forming has been investigated. In the present study, to determine the magnitude of the impact of parameters on the process, process variables such as tube thickness, explosive charge mass, and tube overlap length in the spherical joint were analyzed in terms of the Range of Motion (ROM) of the spherical joint and the diameter of the formed sphere. To achieve the objectives of this research, the required die for forming and fabricating the axial spherical connection was designed and manufactured. The material of the initial workpiece was selected as copper. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was employed for experimental design and statistical analysis using Minitab software. The obtained results indicate that parameters such as tube overlap length had the most significant effect on the spherical joint connection. The maximum axial deflection angle (equivalent to 48 degrees) was achieved at a tube overlap length of 12 mm in the spherical joint. Furthermore, the maximum height of the dome-shaped region of the tube connection was obtained as 23 mm when using a tube with a thickness of 0.8 mm
